New Destinations. New Hub. New Terminal. New Airline.
The CEO & Executive Board have announced that we are purchasing Atlanta, Georgia as a slot. But, that's not all. Surprising reporters and employees, the CEO announced that we are down-sizing our Tampa, FL hub and converting Atlanta, GA into our hub. We will still serve Tampa, but it will no longer be a hub. This will be effective June 20, 2012. If that isn't enough, we are having a change in our Northeastern hub as well. On June 20, 2012 our hub in Boston will become a focus city. This still means it will be "hub-like", just not with as many services. It will be more of an international hub for Northwest Airways as we expand into Europe and Africa. This means we will be canceling service from Boston to Raleigh and Boston to Pittsburgh as of June 20. Instead, we are making New York (JFK) into our new Northeastern hub. In both Atlanta and New York, changes are being made throughout the terminals, as we have purchased Terminal 4 at New York (JFK). In Atlanta, we will be operating out of Concourse C for the time-being. But, our CEO has also commissioned for a new Concourse to be built at Atlanta. Concourse F. We will meet with our codeshare partners based there and discuss the probability of a joint-terminal, in which ALL Northwest, Gulf Coast, Soul Plane, SBAir, USAirlines, and USA Airways planes routed through there could land. In a press conference our CEO said: Northwest has decided to make this decision because it will benefit passengers and our codeshare partners. And to Northwest, passengers come FIRST ALWAYS. Currently, two of our codeshare partners are based, or have hubs at Atlanta (Gulf Coast & Soul Plane). Another one of our codeshare partners, SBAir, has hubs based near Atlanta. Both USAirlines & USA Airways serve Atlanta as well. I think that opening our hub at Atlanta will speed up codeshare transfers, be easier on the passenger, have faster turnaround times, and strengthen codeshare relationships. Though we will miss the sunny beaches of Tampa, Florida; we must make this inevitable decision that will benefit our airline. We have also decided to make Boston as a focus city and JFK a hub because frankly, it is easier to make trans-con flights and international flights from JFK for us. Boston will be more of a focus city/international connecting hub for Europe & Africa. We thank you for understanding.
